What to Do Before You Sell
or Give Away Your Mac
Are you looking to upgrade your computer? Selling your current MacBook is a great way to help you raise the funds to buy the latest version on the market.
However, your MacBook contains a lot of personal information, so before you sell yours or give it away, there are a number of steps you should take to ensure your data is removed.

Seven steps to take before selling your MacBook
1. Backup your files
The first thing you should do is to back up your files. This will ensure you do not lose any of your current information or data when transferring to a new computer.
To do this, there are two methods you can use:
- Use Time Machine
This is the built-in system on a MacBook and automatically backs up your file, allowing you to recover any lost items that were accidentally lost or to restore your data on a new device.
- Use iCloud
This is Apple’s remote storage solution that lets users securely store their data without the need for an external drive. Apple gives its MacBook users up to 5GB of free storage, but users can add more as required.
2. Sign out of iTunes
Once you have backed up your files, the next step you should undertake is to sign out of your iTunes account.
You should also deauthorize the device from your list of computers. To do this, open iTunes and select Store > Deauthorize This Computer.
3. Sign out of iCloud
Another important step to protecting your data is to sign out of our iCloud account. To do this, head to the Apple menu on your MacBook and navigate to System Preferences > iCloud > Sign Out.
4. Sign out of iMessage
Equally as important is to sign out of your iMessage account. If your MacBook is running OS X Mountain Lion or later, then you can do this by opening the Messages app and navigating to Messages > Preferences > Accounts > Sign Out.
5. Remove Bluetooth devices
If you have paired your MacBook with any Bluetooth equipment, then make sure you remove any saved devices. This is particularly important if you are gifting the MacBook to someone in the same household.
To do this, head to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Bluetooth > Unpair All Devices.
6. Erase Your Mac Drive
This is the most important step to make before you sell or give away your MacBook. Erasing your drive is crucial to keeping your data safe, and to do this, restart the device and press and hold the Command and R keys as it boots up.
From here, select Disk Utility and click on the erase button in the toolbar to remove your data.
7. Reinstall macOS
Once you have successfully erased your Mac Drive, reboot and open Disk Utility again. Select reinstall macOS and follow the commands provided by the setup assistant.
Once this has been completed, you can shut down your Mac, and it is safe to sell.
