How To Erase and reinstall macOS on your MacBook and iMac

There are a variety of reasons why you would wish to restore your Mac machine to factory settings. You may wish to sell, trade, recycle, or give it away, but you do not want your personal information to fall into the wrong hands. Perhaps your Mac has been being slow recently, and you'd want to get it up and running again.
Here's how to restore factory settings on your Mac. (Note: You may want to backup your data before reinstalling).

How to Factory Reset a Mac or MacBook (macOS Monterey)
|
|
Requirement:
- You Mac is using Apple’s silicon chipsets or is newer Intel-based Mac (2017 or newer).
- Running on the latest macOS Monterey
|
|
1. Click the Apple icon in the menu bar
|
|
2. Select System Preferences
|
|
3. Select 'Erase All Contents and Settings'
|
|
4. Enter your password, select ‘OK’
5. Erase Assistant opens and asks you to sign in with your administrator credentials. Enter the password you use to log in to your Mac, then click OK.
6. If you're asked to back up your Mac before resetting it, you can open Time Machine and back up to an external storage device. Or click Continue to proceed without making a new backup.

7. Click Continue to allow your settings, media, data, and the other listed items to be removed.
|
|
8. If you're asked to sign out of Apple ID, enter your Apple ID password and click Continue.
9. Click Erase All Content & Settings to confirm that you want to proceed.
|
|
10. You might be asked to select a Wi-Fi network or attach a network cable. To select a Wi-Fi network, use the Wi-Fi menu in the upper-right corner of the screen.
11. After joining a network, your Mac activates. Click Restart.
|
|
After restart, a setup assistant guides you through the setup process, as if you're setting up your Mac for the first time.

How to Factory Reset a Mac or MacBook (pre-macOS Monterey)
|
|
1. . Shut down your Mac completely and connect it to a power source.
2. Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these two keys until you see an Apple logo or other image:
Command (⌘) and R
|
|
3. When you see a Recovery Mode menu, select Disk Utility
|
|
4. Select ‘Macintosh HD’ startup disk and click the Erase
|
|
5. A pop-up window should appear. Select the Format option Mac Extended (Journaled) or APFS. > select Erase again
6. Click Done and Quit Disk Utility to return to the utilities window.
7. From the ultities windows, select Reinstall macOS and then click Continue.

8. Press Continue. A pop-up window will appear, choose Continue.
|
|
9. Read the software license agreement and click Agree.
10. Choose your boot disk and click Install.
11. The computer will restart and continue installing.
|
|
12. The process will takes a while. After that the factory restore is done.
